Mate, I'll take fortnightly because it's always excellent!

Introverted extrovert over here, apparently. Like, I enjoy people and all, but they exhaust me. Different to an ambivert because I can't switch between the two.

Thanks Lewis! I think we ambiverts will claim you anyway! We'll take all the best people :)

"I’m rarely invited to parties, for obvious reasons" this got a guffaw out of me (as did other bits but this in particular) (I would of course invite you to every party I threw were I the kind of person who threw parties). Loved this piece.

Also, I was just ranting about the introvert/extrovert thing to one of our dear mutual friends recently, albeit with less humor. And can I just say how refreshing it is to read in one place on the internet that it's nice to have small interactions with other human beings when out and about as opposed to the usual "Oh God I hate PEOPLE how dare they TALK to me every aspect of my life is HELLISH and this is the WORST."

I'd say I'm an ambivert but I can't because I'm at the point where every single label makes me mad.

Haha thanks Lynda! And yes, it's so funny how everyone is so down on other people all the time... and then wonder why they feel anxious and sad! Talk to your neighbours, people!

Haha, love it!

You didn't exactly say this but the lauding of introverts of the last decade or so is nauseating. Just because you can't make eye contact or hold an interesting conversation, doesn't mean you're some sensitive genius who's put upon by a bullying society.

We're all inept in some ways, but we don't get to claim it as a plus.

I'm neither and both, which, unless you're an attention seeking arsehole or an obnoxious misanthrope, is everyone. Although an ambivert sounds more fun.

Exactly Dean! Haha there really is a popular book about how great introverts are, and how marginalised they are by a society that's set up for people who are able to have conversations with each other 😂

Full of gems, this was (as someone who is only fun at the right kind of parties). Genuine laughs, keep doing what you're doing even if you do end up driving long-haul.

Thanks Skye! No one wants me to be driving lorries, tbh!

I’m a bit suspicious of all this vert stuff. Mainly because we actually get our energy from food, and any other meaning of “energy” rings alarm bells for me.

And yes, this idea that introverts are just sort of better – it’s insufferable.

Georgina Bruce's avatar

What, you mean you don't get energy by draining it from unsuspecting introverts? You're so unevolved, Matt ;)

Does the Rhyl Sun Centre still exist? I always wanted to go there when I was little, and I wonder if it's still possible.

Georgina Bruce's avatar

I believe it's been shut down for a while now, sorry! But there are plans to do up that bit of the seafront so maybe there will be something even better there!

Ambiverts, unite! I like to go all-out with my razzle, dazzle, then lie in bed for 3 hours staring at the ceiling, thinking about everything I did and said. Actually, I think that’s called anxiety 🤣

I want to be an ambivert! But alas I have no clue what I am; I think i'm an introvert but everyone else says I'm an extrovert! Who's right? Who's wrong? Maybe there's no right or wrong!

Now I'm more confused....

I had no idea that I'm an ambivert, but it all makes sense now! I'm the lone theatre-goer who traps elderly members of coach parties in their seats during the interval of a midweek musical matinée. I make them talk to me, and (hopefully) hand over their sweets.

The best reads are the ones where you think it must have been written for you specifically, and this is one of those. Not because of the question if which prefix to add to vert, but because of the lorry driving. When I was a child I found it the most appealing profession. All alone in a cab up high, always travelling, preferably through a dark and rainy night, with nobody talking to me. I don't know where I got this romantic idea from, but it just seemed like a dream job.

And also I laughed, in many places 😁

I would much rather read your best thoughts occasionally than have a queue of unread emails waiting for my attention. This recommendation that we all have to publish weekly is obviously bullshit, which becomes clear as soon as you find a few writers you look forward to reading, skip a week and find that your inbox became another job to do instead of a fun distraction from work!

Expand full comment
Georgina Bruce's avatar

Absolutely! I've posted weekly and not missed for nearly two years now, but it's just not going to be sustainable while I've got so many other things going on. Agreed, it's rubbish if it becomes just another chore.
